CONQUERING THE BIG APPLE

This is one of the more interesting things I've been able to blog about -- and brag about -- when it comes to my friend and fellow author John Floyd. Remember his short story "Molly's Plan," which we included in Dreamland in 2016? It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 2014 and later selected by James Patterson for inclusion in The Best American Mystery Stories. 

Now it has been chosen by the New York Public Library to be a part of their permanent digital collection, which means it will be available through the library’s SimplyE mobile reading app (http://simplye.net). When commuters log in to the subway wi-fi network they’ll be directed to a library website with various collections of fiction and nonfiction -- similar to a Netflix queue. As busy as the NYC subway system stays, that makes for tremendous exposure for "Molly's Plan."

Can't wait for 2018 ... we'll have three new titles, including my latest Oakdale series novel, 40 Days. Taking place in forty days of real time during the season of Lent and culminating on Easter Sunday, this novel has a faith-based feel and even a supernatural flavor that my previous Oakdale thrillers didn't have. But it's Oakdale -- same crazy people living there, lots of old money, skeletons in everyone's closets, and a whole slew of people up in each other's business. (Sounds like home, doesn't it?) We'll launch 40 Days at Lemuria in Jackson, Mississippi, on Wednesday, March 7. And 2018 will also feature great new books from John Floyd and Valerie Winn.  

As of today, exactly 103 days away!

John was recently at Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi, to conduct a unique interview with New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan about her latest book, The Last Castle (an epic story of the Biltmore House, the nation’s largest home). John is a big fan of Denise's work, and the conversational session had the audience gathered for Denise's reading absolutely riveted!

Susan Cushman, meanwhile, has visited states all over the southeastern USA in recent weeks and has made many new friends at independent bookstores and literary conferences. She has even Skyped with several book clubs across the country who've ordered Cherry Bomb.

A NEW WORLD RECORD

With school back in session this fall, how about a little quiz?

TRUE OR FALSE: A book published by Dogwood Press is poised to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

Uh, I wish. Maybe one day ...

TRUE OR FALSE: A Dogwood Press-published author is included in an anthology of 100 stories from 100 authors, which should indeed eclipse the previous record (50 stories from 50 publishers).

Yep, that's true! John Floyd's story "The Tenth Floor" is in CEP Greatest Anthology Written, published by Celenic Earth Publications. The book will feature authors from South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Nigeria, Mexico, Bolivia, and Switzerland. An official launch event is scheduled for September 30 in Cape Town, South Africa, where the book will be “authenticated and verified” according to specifications by Guinness. To attain World Record status, 500 print copies and 500 e-book copies of the book must be sold.

Speaking of John's short stories, his "Rooster Creek" graces the pages of the all-new Black Cat Mystery Magazine! Also, BCMM has already committed to another Floyd piece for their second issue. Way to go!

Back to the story "Rooster Creek" ... it's time for the big reveal: The next John Floyd collection of short stories, entitled The Barrens, will be published by Dogwood Press in summer 2018 ... in time for the annual Mississippi Book Festival! The Barrens will contain 30 stories, and not only will all be mysteries, of course, there will be an element of crime in all. Can't wait!

Now for another big reveal: My own new Oakdale series novel, 40 Days, will be released in March 2018. It's my first book in three and a half years, and a bit different from previous Oakdale volumes. Yes, there's still the seemingly serene little town with all kinds of crime and dysfunction bubbling below the surface, lots of folks still up in each other's business. But 40 Days has not only a faith-based element to it, there's a supernatural component to the story as well. It takes place in 40 days of real time and ties into the season of Lent. I'm really excited about it.

Meantime, Susan Cushman is making stops all over the southeast in support of Cherry Bomb. In October she'll visit Pass Christian Books on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and a stop at Page and Palette Books in Fairhope, Alabama, isn't far away. She'll also visit several north Mississippi libraries in the near future, including the Webster County Public Library in Eupora on Monday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m.

And Valerie Winn's long-awaited sequel to Forsaking Mimosa is definite for fall 2018, meaning we're going to have a very busy and fast-paced 2018. VOICES FROM HOME

The Mississippi Book Festival, in my humble opinion, is one of the best things our state has going and a true feather in the Magnolia state's cap. Festival organizers deserve an enormous amount of credit for putting together such a first-class display of authors and literature and love of reading, from the panels in the state capitol that included luminaries like John Grisham, Greg Iles, and Jerry Mitchell to the exhibitor booths and the writers in Author's Alley that dotted the landscape. Even the weather cooperated! Sure, it was hot. But it was dry, and what truly authentic summer event in Mississippi isn't steamy as the tropics?

As a small but traditional publisher, I'm especially proud that two of my authors, John Floyd and Susan Cushman, were on author panels. In fact, both were on the VOICES FROM HOME panel, which was moderated by Tracy Carr. Nothing better than talented Mississippi authors talking about their Mississippi roots and influences on their work!

Susan's Cherry Bomb is off to a great start! A very successful launch kick-started the book all the way to #2 on the August 20 Mississippi Reads top ten list in The Clarion Ledger! Susan checked in right behind John Grisham and ahead of Ace Atkins! I'd say that's pretty good company!

One of my favorite aspects of doing what I do -- both as a book publisher and a published author -- is visiting with folks in stores, libraries, and festivals ... like the Mississippi Book Festival. Sure's it's some kind of hot. But we all stay hydrated, and all of us with Dogwood Press spend time in the tent and do what we Mississippians do well: we visit with folks. It's not only a way to move a few extra books, but you never know who you'll see for the first time in many years, or who might ask you to speak to their writing group or civic organization.

Lemuria owner and legend John Evans will accept a lifetime achievement award at lunch on Saturday, and I'm honored to be one of the presenters Saturday afternoon -- I'll give a pair of talks about the publishing business, and it will be very audience-involved and hopefully a lot of fun. JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS MORNING

I saddled up yesterday and drove to the Memphis home of Susan Cushman, who's the latest addition to the Dogwood Press team, and brought several cases of Cherry Bomb for her to autograph. It was Susan's first time to see actual copies of the book--which she worked on for a full decade--and her reaction was wonderful. For any author, and as a novelist I speak from experience, the feeling of joy at being able to hold your own book in your hands is difficult to express. And it's the first of many happy moments Susan will have with this great read.

A gifted artist as well as a fine writer, Susan has painted many religious icons, including St. Mary of Egypt. That icon is on the back cover of Cherry Bomb and is to the immediate right of Susan along with St. Basil the Great.

We took signed copies over to Burke's Books and visited with Corey and Cheryl Mesler, the owners and a very nice couple. They'll host Susan for a launch event on September 7 at 5:30 p.m.

Gotta like that! Southern Writers Magazine is well worth your time, especially the July/August issue!

We can't wait for the Mississippi Book Festival! Susan will be on the Literary Fiction panel for Cherry Bomb and is hosting another panel, and John Floyd will be on a panel for his great collection of mystery/suspense short stories, Dreamland! Randy Pierce and Valerie Winn and I will also be at the festival. Look for all five of us in the Dogwood Press tent! A great review of Dreamland in the July/August edition of Portico Magazine of Jackson, MS!

Okay, see if you've heard this one before: There's nothing more fun for authors than getting out and visiting with other readers and writers. John Floyd shared some tips with a group of middle school youngsters at a creative camp at Northwest Rankin High School in Brandon, Mississippi, not long ago, and Randy Pierce visited the home of a book club president in Ocean Springs--the group had gathered to discuss his novel Pain Unforgiven and jumped at the chance to ask questions of the author himself. Both Randy and John figure they had as much fun as anyone!

This was MUCH more enjoyable than math and science classes!

Mr. Pierce, you didn't put those stories we told you in your book ... did you ???

And congratulations to John for getting another terrific story published in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. It's called “Trail’s End", the first in a series featuring Mississippi sheriff Ray Douglas. John describes it as sort of a whodunit and said the second installment has already been purchased by Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and should come out in the next few months.

SHARE THE LOVE

Yes, share the love ... of reading! And share with it young people!

This idea isn't new. I've had so many conversations at bookstores and libraries with fellow writers and avid readers just like this:

I WISH I COULD GET MY KIDS TO READ WITHOUT MAKING THEM DO IT. 

I WISH MY GRANDCHILD WOULD PICK UP A BOOK INSTEAD OF THAT STUPID DEVICE.

WHY DON'T THEY LOVE THE WAY A BOOK FEELS IN THEIR HANDS, LIKE WE DO?

Amen to all of that. All we can do is encourage them to read for pleasure. My wife and I did that with our son, with mixed results so far (he's in college). We recommend books to our friends, just as our kids and grandkids recommend books, movies, video games, etc., to their friends. When I was a college freshman, one of my buddies couldn't stop talking about the Stephen King novel, Cujo, and loaned it to me when I expressed interest. Well, guess what? I loved it. And I cobbled together enough one-dollar bills and some loose change and traipsed over to the local bookstore (The Book Mart & Cafe in Starkville, Mississippi) and bought Christine, I'm pretty sure. My mom jumped for joy. Not because I was reading Stephen King, but because I was READING!

So, with all of that in mind ... you want relevancy for your teenage son or daughter (or grandchild) in a work of fiction? The Susan Cushman debut novel we're getting ready to roll out, Cherry Bomb, features sixteen-year-old Mary Catherine Henry -- who goes by Mare -- as the protagonist. She's a runaway, living on the streets. And she's a graffiti artist, throwing up bombs on the walls of abandoned buildings before ducking and running at the first sign (or sound) of a police car.

This is a powerful novel, with Mare meeting up with legendary real-life art legend Elaine de Kooning in what appears to be an especially meaningful mentor/student relationship -- before the women learn of surprising ties that bind them and threaten to tear them apart. Also, we're just over two months from the third Mississippi Book Festival! It's set for Saturday, August 19, and we'll have the Dogwood Press tent on site again this year at the Mississippi State Capitol. Written by Susan Ruddiman, the article discusses traditionally-published authors and is a good and informative read. And that same Johnnie Bernhard will be on the aforementioned "Voices of Home" panel at the Mississippi Book Festival! Speaking of Valerie, we're not too far away from the release of her second novel, a very well-written follow-up to Forsaking Mimosa.

CHERRY (BOMB) ON TOP

Wow! We're suddenly a little more than ninety days from launching the Susan Cushman debut novel, Cherry Bomb. I can't wait, and I know Susan can't. She has already been burning up the roads to promote a pair of books released early this year (Tangles & Plaques: A Mother and Daughter Face Alzheimer's, A Second Blooming: Becoming the Women We Are Meant To Be), so she will be no stranger to Mississippi audiences when she returns in August with her great new work of fiction!

The official launch date is Tuesday, August 8 at Lemuria Books in Jackson, Mississippi. John Floyd's winning streak continues: He just learned that his short story, "Molly's Plan," will be translated into Russian and reprinted in January 2018 in the Inostrannaya Literatura in Moscow. "Molly's Plan" was featured in the 2015 volume of Best American Mystery Stories. Not only that, John will have a story, "Life is Good," in Passport to Murder, the forthcoming 2017 Bouchercon anthology! He also has stories coming up in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, The Strand Magazine, and Woman’s World.

Valerie Winn is making good progress on her follow-up novel to Forsaking Mimosa. I'm working on a new novel as well and am making good use of the creative juices--there's nothing quite like getting a phone call in the middle of being deep into writing a scene and suddenly having to speak coherently with a real person about a real matter. Hey, we writers wouldn't have it any other way!

John and I will both hit several Books A Million stores this spring, and all of us are really looking forward to the third annual Mississippi Books Festival in Jackson on August 19.
