THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

John Floyd forwarded me an email he received from a Texas man who stopped at the Books A Million in Meridian, Mississippi, while traveling and met John while he was signing Fifty Mysteries, which is getting rave reviews. Here's an excerpt from that note:

I read Deception cover to cover before I even left Atlanta! The stories were thoroughly entertaining and I have always enjoyed surprise endings. I have to confess, I stopped at the same bookstore in Meridian on the way back to Texas and bought the remainder of your books! I am now proudly attempting to solve crimes along with Miss Angela Potts.

Gosh, what a nice man! Sir, we thank you for your generosity, and it goes to show that all of us who love to read are like little kids at Christmas when we discover a new author -- we want to rush out and buy up everything he or she has written and disappear into their stories!

A roomful of folks enjoy John reading from Fifty Mysteries at Lemuria in Jackson, Mississippi, on October 29.

Randy Pierce, Valerie Winn, John and I all visited Pass Christian Books on November 8 and really enjoyed meeting Coast residents and others who were passing through. Owner Scott Naugle, who lost his original Pass Christian bookstore to Hurricane Katrina, opened his lovely little store on Scenic Drive about a year ago. It has a café, a second-story Mississippi writers room, and an absolutely spectacular view of the water. Be sure to stop in when you're in the area.

Mimosas and a chocolate liqueur drink were served in honor of Forsaking Mimosa and Magnolia Mud!

John and I put on a brief seminar at the Flynt Memorial Library in Flowood on November 20 on how to go about getting published and really enjoyed taking questions from the gathering. Librarian Ashley Biggs will host a much larger seminar in April, when Randy, Valerie, John and I will convene on a Saturday morning and give presentations on the different aspects of writing (plot, character development, point of view, sense of time and place) as well as the publishing and business sides. We really look forward to this one!

Talented Mississippi writer Katrina Byrd, flanked by John and me, after the talk in Flowood.

One of the best parts of doing what we do is running into old friends at bookstores and libraries while promoting our books. Then there are the conversations we get into with folks we don't know (like the Texas resident who bought the entire John Floyd catalog from Books A Million of Meridian). It's absolutely essential -- in my humble opinion -- that you're a people person if you want to effectively sell books, and we all have stories of "hand-selling" them to customers.

At Turning Pages Books in Natchez, a man and a woman (who turned out to be brother and sister) walked in and asked me about my new novel, Director's Cut. They both bought copies, and I learned that she and her family lived in Louisiana and he and his family were from Little Rock, Arkansas. I got a very nice email from him the other day, and I can't thank him enough for taking the time to write me. His kind comments absolutely made my day.

Great to see my friend Jason Roberts at Books A Million of Hattiesburg...

...and it's always good to see my cousin Jeanie Ables when I visit Natchez to sign books!

Randy, me, and John at The Book Mart in Starkville on November 23. Not a good idea to put us next to the food!

We'll drive lots of miles, shake lots of hands, and pitch our books to lots of folks in December ... and we wouldn't have it any other way! Visit www.dogwoodpress.com for a complete list of book tour stops, and if you have a Kindle and would prefer a download, here's what's available from the Dogwood Press catalog:

Thanks very much for your time, and stop and say hello at a book event! Happy Thanksgiving!

LIGHTS...CAMERA...ACTION!

And just like that, the tour for my new novel, Director's Cut, is underway! The excitement never goes away when I launch a new book. It's as much of a thrill as it was over a decade ago when my first one was published. And yes, it's a relief to see my name and the book title spelled correctly, and the front cover look like it's supposed to when that first box is opened.

Know something all authors go through? WILL PEOPLE LIKE MY BOOK? You find me one author who is so utterly self-confident in that new book--he or she is as convinced readers will like it like he knows the sun will come up tomorrow morning--and I'll find you scads of authors who have the jitters to at least a degree. WILL THE REVIEWS BE ANY GOOD? I go through that. So do the authors I publish. And, I suspect, any writer with a pulse. I'm not sure we'd be human if we didn't.

The marketing is done well in advance, of course, and designed to roll out all at once, from television and radio interviews to newspaper and magazine features and book reviews. Not everything always goes as planned ("Mr. Lee, I'm sorry, but the producer who booked you for that date no longer works here, and we already have a guest scheduled today on Midday."), but hey, things happen. And one of the best parts of launching Director's Cut was being interviewed by Marshall Ramsey on Mississippi Public Radio. He's a good guy, as talented as they come, and has a huge following--meaning a lot of folks heard our 20-minute visit several days ago. That's a good thing!

Me with Marshall Ramsey, the award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Clarion Ledger.
Opening Night at Lemuria, where my running friends cleaned up just like I did to make that evening very special!

We're also launching John Floyd's fantastic new collection of humor, Fifty Mysteries, this month. Remember how enjoyable those 6-8 stories about the retired small-town sheriff (Charles "Chunky" Jones) and his retired elementary schoolteacher, Angela "Angel" Potts were in the first four collections? We've had such good feedback we decided to publish an entire book of 50 of them, all in a puzzle/solution format with the answers in the back...a little bit like the Encyclopedia Brown books John and I (and so many others folks) loved back in the day. Plan on getting your copy at Lemuria on Wednesday, October 29!
These are great fun!

These are a hoot! The sheriff's former fifth-grade teacher helps him solves crimes whether he wants the assistance or not, and she makes a big point of correcting his grammar along the way! And if you need some new Floyd right away, drop by Books A Million, Barnes & Noble, or wherever you buy magazines and pick up the current edition of The Strand Magazine. John has an excellent suspense story in there called "Molly's Plan," which sides just pages away from a fun slice of Michael Connolly short fiction!

John Floyd and Michael Connolly in the same mag? Hard to beat!

What I really enjoy is traveling to different towns and meeting members of Friends of the Library groups and book clubs. You talk about finding loyal readers...it's hard to argue that the best book promotion is word of mouth, because when these folks like a book, they make sure their friends know!
I had the honor of speaking to the Lucky Ladies book club at Corner Bakery of Madison.
Me at the Pontotoc County Library. There were either people on the other side of the room who couldn't be seen in this picture or the rest of the library was on fire.
Valerie Winn with Shereen Kostmayer, who recently opened Southern Bound Bookshop in Biloxi.

Randy Pierce takes questions about Magnolia Mud at the Choctaw County Library at a talk put together
by Jan Ballard and the Yarn Spinners book club.

And a shout-out to two friends with new books. I had the privilege of serving as editor on both: Emily Jones, a retired newspaper columnist, has just launched a really neat collection of humorous columns (and wonderful recipes) called Love, Laughter, and Losing My Keys. Pick up a signed copy at The Book Mart & Café in Starkville, among other places, and just try to stop reading the columns once you've started! Also Anthony Kalberg is just days away from launching his excellent literary mystery, A Chasing of the Wind, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Look both of them up on Facebook, and visit Emily at www.deludeddiva.com and Anthony at www.anthonykalberg.com.
You won't be able to put it down!

Funny, poignant, and filled with beautiful artwork!

UPCOMING APPEARANCES: Really looking forward to Saturday, November 8, when John, Randy, Valerie, and I will team up for what we think of as Dogwood Press Day at Pass Christian Books on the Coast! On Thursday, November 20, John, Randy, and I will be together at Flynt Memorial Library in Flowood for an author seminar at 6:00 p.m. at which we'll discuss researching our books, how to fine-tune writing skills, and how to go about trying to get published. On Sunday, November 23, John, Randy, and I will join a number of authors at The Book Mart & Café in Starkville for the annual Christmas Open House, and John and I look forward to the annual Christmas Author Extravaganza at Main Street Books of Hattiesburg on Monday, December 1.

CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH A GREAT BEACH READ

I hope you're having a relaxing Fourth. The phrase IT'S A GREAT BEACH READ is often used to describe a good book that, in my mind, you can take not only to the beach, but the pool or even under a shady tree. And if you have plenty of beach but are running short of good beach reads, may I suggest Valerie Winn's Forsaking Mimosa. Pick up a copy tomorrow (Saturday, July 5 at 11 a.m.) at Pink Rooster Art Gallery in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and meet the nice lady who can decorate a book display like no one else!

Definitely a great beach read!

Randy Pierce and I really enjoyed signing books at a reception at the Mississippi Bar Association last weekend in Destin, Florida. We were part of a multi-author event that included author/publisher Neil White, Judge Charles Pickering, former Ole Miss chancellor Robert Khayat, and many others.

Joe signs The Long Road Home
Randy signs Magnolia Mud
I've read books by most of the authors in this picture. Whole lot of talent assembled here, and some very colorful shirts!
And I even got to meet one of my heroes! The cardboard cutout version, anyway. Thank ya very much!

Randy Pierce and his family made a really neat road trip in June to New York City for the annual Picnic in the Park in Central Park. If a visit to the Big Apple is on your bucket list, be sure to make Central Park part of the itinerary. This is a MISSISSIPPI event that draws people from all over the country who wind up purchasing neat items like--wait for it--signed copies of Randy Pierce's Magnolia Mud!

A great beach read for your next trip to Central Park!

And now...it's time to unveil a pair of book covers for the very first time! My new Oakdale suspense series novel, Director's Cut, will be released on October 1. Protagonist Tripp Kelly is a likeable professor of film study at the local university and seems like a good guy--problem is, he's a serial killer! I'm really excited about this book, and equally excited about the new John M. Floyd collection of humorous stories, Fifty Mysteries. As I've said, we've put together an entire collection of bite-size mysteries featuring small-town sheriff Charles "Chunky" Jones and Angela "Angel" Potts, the sheriff's fifth-grade teacher; she's retired these days and helps the sheriff solve crimes whether he wants her assistance or not (and corrects his grammar while doing so). Look for Fifty Mysteries in early October.

Remember, the folks who strike us as the most normal and sane may not be...

Lots and lots and lots of laughs!

When you have time, visit the recently-remodeled Dogwood Press web site at www.dogwoodpress.com for book signing schedules, photographs, and email addresses to reach us. And speaking of great beach reads, most of the Dogwood Press catalog is available for download to your Kindle:

RANDY PIERCE - Magnolia Mud
JOHN M. FLOYD - Deception
JOHN M. FLOYD - Clockwork
VALERIE WINN - Forsaking Mimosa
JOE LEE - Last Chance Texaco
JOE LEE - The Long Road Home
JOE LEE - Judgment Day
JOHN LEE - The Legend of Roger

Thanks for your time, come say hello at a book talk, and remember the sunscreen!

THE HARDEST-WORKING MAN IN SHOW BUSINESS...

My vote, at least for spring 2014, is Randy Pierce, the sitting Mississippi Supreme Court justice and the author of Magnolia Mud, that can't-put-it-down tale of a fictional governor's race in Mississippi. It's truly mind-boggling how much time Randy has spent on the road this spring as he has juggled book signings with court responsibilities and family time.

But it absolutely has to be done, if you want your book to sell--especially if you're working with a smaller publishing house. There are only a handful of "rich" authors who can hit the deadline on that next bestseller and know the money is going to pour in. All the rest of us (even many with contracts at major publishing houses) should be looking to constantly get our name and work out there at every available opportunity. As John Evans, proprietor at Lemuria Books in Jackson, once told me, "One book at a time." He meant that in the context of sales, for me as a publisher. And he's right.

It takes a great deal of time and effort to build a substantial fan base as an author, and it really surprises me to meet prospective authors and sense that they don't want to put in the hard miles--or feel they shouldn't have to. Likewise, I've heard these infamous words a number of times--"I'M NOT DOING THIS FOR THE MONEY"--and at the risk of sounding cynical, simply saying such a thing conveys the opposite. Should you expect professional treatment from your publisher and to be paid every cent you're owed in a timely manner? Absolutely. But until you've sold a ginormous amount of books and are mentioned in the same breath as John Grisham, Harlan Coben, and Greg Iles, remember that you're writing for one very important reason: you love doing it. And be prepared to drive your backside off if you're fortunate enough to land a contract with any publisher, big or small.

Uh, Dad, there aren't any pictures in this book!
John Floyd has a new book coming out four short months from now! If you've read his excellent mystery/suspense story collections, you know that each one has 6-8 humorous mysteries featuring small-town sheriff Charles "Chunky" Jones who solves crimes with the assistances of Angela Potts (his third grade teacher) whether he wants the help or not. And now, by popular demand, we're about to roll out 50 Mysteries (The Angela Files). If you've enjoyed John's Chunky/Angela stories in Woman's World over the years, we're using the same "question/solution" format. What does that mean? Well, remember the old Encyclopedia Brown paperbacks from a generation ago, where the teenage sleuth solved crimes and mysteries, and all the stories ended with something like, "How did Encyclopedia know who stole Uncle Fred's jar of tomatoes? Turn to page 138 to find out." That's what we're doing with John's new book. John has gotten absolutely fantastic feedback to the Chunky/Angela stories over the years, and we aim to please. So an entire book of them is coming!

Always good for a laugh: listening to John read the Chunky/Angela stories aloud.

John is also part of a new anthology called Trust and Treachery, and he'll be on a panel at the 2014 Louisiana Book Festival on November 1 in Baton Rouge.

My next book, Director's Cut, is the fifth volume of my Oakdale series, and will be published at the same time John's new book comes out. I can't wait to gas up the Bookmobile and hit the road to speak and sign books at venues large and small--some of my very favorite moments in my decade-plus of writing books and working with authors have come at some of our smallest Mississippi libraries in front of a dozen people. There is absolutely nothing more gratifying when someone says, "I have all of your books, and I wanted to make sure I got up here so you could sign the new one."

That's me at my church's annual Cajun Fest event. I stayed away from the space jump again this year.

The vantage point I have as a publisher and marketing nerd (as well as that of an author) gives me a different perspective when watching what independent bookstore owners--such as Scott Naugle of Pass Christian Books on the Mississippi Gulf Coast--and his staff go through to get ready for a BIG EVENT, such as the recent Robin Roberts appearance. The beloved Good Morning America anchor grew up right there on the Coast, and there was a throng of folks who came out to purchase her new book. Among them were Randy Pierce and Valerie Winn--all of us enjoy meeting mega-selling authors, too, especially when it comes to someone as genuine as Robin Roberts.

Two very talented authors...two very hard-working people...one really neat bookstore!

And let me mention a book for you to be watching for, especially if you live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast: first-time author Anthony W. Kalberg's fascinating novel, A Chasing of the Wind. Anthony has a background in theater and stage presentation, and he has lived through Katrina, Camille, and other destructive hurricanes on the Coast. He also loves a good crime story, and Wind begins with the grisly discovery by the local sheriff of two men...a crime that takes over two decades to solve. It's a great read, and you'll enjoy meeting Anthony when he hits the book-signing circuit late this year.

Joining the ranks of Mississippi authors very soon...

I LOVE WHAT I DO!!!

That's the honest truth, and I know I can speak for the authors on the Dogwood Press team, too! Writing is more than just fun...it's a calling. We wake up each day and look forward to it. Additionally, we thoroughly enjoy getting out and meeting people. There's nothing better than having conversations with folks who also love to write, and love to discuss their favorite authors and the craft of writing. The icing on the cake is when someone comes along at a book talk and says, "You make this book sound so interesting, and you sound like you're having so much fun! I think I'll give it a try!"

I was honored to speak at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College several days ago to a roomful of creative writing students and shared something I've told a lot of folks over the years: Many people talk about wanting to write a book, but they're quick to add that it's difficult to make time for writing. Well, hogwash. Again, we wake up each day and look forward to it. It's a priority. And that said, you can complete an entire book in one calendar year by simply writing a page a day!

I kindly ask you to refrain from throwing fruit and vegetables until the end of the talk!

The nice lady to my right is Jennifer Moffett, creative writing instructor at MGCCC. She put together a compilation called Illumination that includes essays and poetic works from the students I spoke to.

Randy Pierce has had a fantastic Magnolia Mud launch! A packed house welcomed him in Richton on March 31, then he officially kicked off the tour at Lemuria in Jackson before journeying to Oxford for a stop at Square Books and over to the Delta for an evening at Turn Row Books in Greenwood. He was written up in The Clarion Ledger and The Sun Herald newspapers, and strong reviews have been published so far in the Madison Herald and Neshoba Democrat.

The tour launched on April Fool's Day!

A fun appearance at Square Books

And a stop at a classy bookstore in the Mississippi Delta!
Meantime, John Floyd accomplished something VERY impressive: he was mentioned as a contributor to three very prestigious and widely-read magazines -- The Strand Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Woman's World -- at the same time! John was the first author I published, and it remains a true honor to work with one of the very best writers of short fiction in the country.

ALSO...we've titled the new John Floyd collection 50 Mysteries, and it will be out in October. Remember those funny stories in his previous hardback collections you enjoy so much with Sheriff Charles "Chunky" Jones and his former elementary school teacher, Angela "Angel" Potts, who helps him solve crimes whether he wants her help or not? An entire book -- in a story/solution box format -- is just months away!

Chocolate bliss...and a great John Floyd short story...who could ask for anything more!!!

What a fantastic magazine...and classed up, of course, by the one-and-only John Floyd!

Also an excellent publication! John and Tennessee Williams in the same issue!

And then there's one of the most creative people I know: Valerie Winn. Two years after the release of her great novel, Forsaking Mimosa, she continues to come up with some fantastic ways to get the attention of folks who haven't been introduced to her work!

These ladies are all eyecare professionals. What better way to check your eyesight than to read a good book?

Happy reading...and happy spring!

John's new book, 50 Mysteries, is less than six months away. So is my new Oakdale series novel, Director's Cut. Can't wait for those to come out! For a complete list of all our author events, as well as pictures, book reviews, and more, please visit www.dogwoodpress.com. And here's our updated list of Dogwood Press titles that are available for download through Amazon Kindle. Order right now and start reading in less than a minute!

WITH APOLOGIES TO ROBERT FROST...

No, Randy Pierce won't be stopping by woods on a snowy evening...but he'll be stopping by bookstores, libraries, festivals, conferences and more to sign copies of Magnolia Mud this spring! And he indeed has miles to go before he sleeps!

The Magnolia Mud tour officially gets started at Lemuria in Jackson, Mississippi, on Tuesday, April 1. Yep, that's April Fool's Day. But it's nonetheless a great day to mark on your calendar!

The first printing has arrived...

...and Randy is already wearing out a few signing pens!

In the meantime, author John M. Floyd's short story, "Hunters," is the first story featured in the May, 2014 edition of the widely-read Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. A typically compelling Floyd short story, and great exposure for one of the best writers of short fiction in the business. John is a regular contributor to Woman's World with his Charles "Chunky" Jones/Angela "Angel" Potts mystery/solution series of humorous stories, and on that front, we have big news: Dogwood Press will publish a collection of 50 Angela/Chunky stories this fall, just in time for Christmas! Lots of John's loyal readers have asked if one of his collections would ever be devoted to Chunky/Angela stories, and now the answer is YES!!! Details to follow...

John recently gave a talk and sold copies of his hardback collections to the Brandon Book Club in Rankin County, MS.
And this is really neat: Valerie Winn had a successful Skype session with a book club in Pennsylvania. They were interested in Forsaking Mimosa, and technology was the way to bridge the 1,000-mile-plus gap between Valerie and her fans from the Keystone State!

Are the web cams plugged in?

Also, my next book is called Director's Cut. It's the fifth volume of my Oakdale series and will debut in October. I had great fun with this one: it's about a mild-mannered professor of film study at the local university who turns out to be a serial killer!

Let's see...Oakdale novels...old money, crazy people, skeletons in every closet, people all up in each other's business. That sounds like a winning formula! All I have to do now is learn how to type!!!
Please visit the Dogwood Press web site at www.dogwoodpress.com for updated book signing calendars for all of our authors, including the many Randy Pierce stops this spring! Also, please like our Dogwood Press Facebook page, too! We'll debut Magnolia Mud in e-book form via Amazon Kindle soon after the launch, and you can download the following Dogwood Press novels RIGHT NOW on your Kindle:

VALERIE WINN - Forsaking Mimosa
JOHN M. FLOYD - Deception
JOHN M. FLOYD - Clockwork
JOE LEE - Last Chance Texaco
JOE LEE - The Long Road Home
JOE LEE - The Magnolia Triangle
JOHN LEE - The Legend of Roger

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day!

WATCH YOUR STEP!

Yes, watch your step...because there's plenty of mud straight ahead. As in Magnolia Mud, the great new novel from Randy Pierce. Here's the book cover:

Artwork by graphic designer par excellence Cyndi Clark!

Dates to mark on your calendar for Randy's launch:

Monday, March 31...Richton Public Library @ 4pm
Tuesday, April 1...Lemuria (Jackson) @ 5pm
Wednesday, April 2...Square Books (Oxford) @ 5:30pm
Saturday, April 5...Hodges Pharmacy (Leakesville) @ 10am

And that's just the beginning. Randy will be all over the state of Mississippi before journeying to New York City in June for the annual Picnic in the Park. If you're not familiar with this event, it's very much a MISSISSIPPI extravaganza and an opportunity to cross paths with Magnolia State natives who live in different parts of the country these days.

Meantime, Valerie Winn will sign copies of Forsaking Mimosa and visit with folks who stop by for a cuppa Joe at Delo's Heavenly House of Coffee on Saturday, February 8 at 8 a.m.. It's located at 3880 Gautier Vancleave Road at Baywood Commons. Check out the display Valerie made for the event:

There's nothing better than a steaming cup of delicious coffee with a great read!

John Floyd will visit the Pontotoc County Library on Tuesday, April 10 to sign copies of Deception and his other great collections of mystery/suspense short stories. And I'll sign copies of Last Chance Texaco and my other Oakdale novels at the annual Cajun Fest celebration in May at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Madison. My next Oakdale novel will come out later this year, by the way. The protagonist is a serial killer!!!

I'm asked often about whether our books our available for download. Yes...on Amazon Kindle. Please note that Randy's book will be available on Kindle in mid-April. Here are the Dogwood Press titles you can get for your Kindle RIGHT NOW:

JOHN M. FLOYD - Deception
JOHN M. FLOYD - Clockwork
VALERIE WINN - Forsaking Mimosa
JOE LEE - Last Chance Texaco
JOE LEE - The Long Road Home
JOE LEE - The Magnolia Triangle
JOHN LEE - The Legend of Roger

Be sure to grab The Legend of Roger for the middle-schooler in your life. It's a quick read and a very entertaining story that more or less fits the sci-fi/fantasy genre. There's a lot of humor in it, and absolutely nothing you wouldn't want your child of 10-12 years old coming across in a book.

Thanks for your time, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
