ANOTHER FLOYD MILESTONE

I published John Floyd for the first time back in 2006. That collection of mystery/suspense short stories, Rainbow's End, set the stage for a long-term friendship and a whole series of fantastic story collections that continues this fall with The Barrens. One of the many unique aspects of Rainbow's End was the inclusion of six humorous mysteries which featured Sheriff Charles "Chunky" Jones and his retired elementary school teacher Angel Potts. The Chunky/Angel stories were already a fixture in Woman's World magazine (which has ginormous readership), and John and I both thought half a dozen of them would be a wonderful addition to that first book. Over the years, as Woman's World has continued to publish one Floyd story after another, I've paid close attention as the number of published Floyd pieces in the magazine neared the century mark.

Great reading made easy, too, with John in nearly every issue!

Well, that mountain has been scaled. With the July 16th issue of Woman's World hitting magazine racks all over the country, it marks the ONE HUNDREDTH time they've published a John Floyd story. Some interesting facts and figures from this remarkable feat: John's first Woman's World story was in the April 20, 1999 edition. In 2001 he began featuring the two aforementioned characters on an ongoing basis, which, as he says, keeps him from having to "introduce them" in each story--and gives him more words to devote to the story's plot. Also, 62 of the 100 stories involve either a robbery or a burglary, with only 21 involving murders--John notes in his Sleuth Sayers blog that Woman's World has always liked non-lethal crimes!

Here's to another 100 stories in Woman's World from John in the coming years! And he has stories coming up in the next issue of Strand Magazine and in the next print edition of The Saturday Evening Post. There's more: others are ahead in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Black Cat Mystery Magazine, and an excellent western called "Gun Work" in the 2018 Best American Mystery Stories. (It's worth noting that "Gun Work" is included in The Barrens!)

Meantime, Molly May is getting ready to hit the road in support of My Crowning Achievement (Beating Cancer). You can meet Molly in person (as well as John, Valerie Winn, Randy Pierce, and me) in the Dogwood Press tent at the Mississippi Book Festival on Saturday, August 18 at the Mississippi State Capitol. JOHN'S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Think of some of the people who have won Lifetime Achievement Awards. The words alone catch your attention--whatever such an honor is presented for, it's a pretty big deal, right? And it's an especially big deal for my friend and fellow author John Floyd to have just been named The Edward D. Hoch Memorial Golden Derringer Award winner, presented annually for Lifetime Achievement in the writing of short mystery fiction.

As I tell folks at book talks, the Derringer is to the short story what an Oscar is to acting, or the Grammy is to the music business. John has won several Derringer Awards over the years--a major accomplishment--but the scope of today's announcement leaves me absolutely awestruck. As well as very, very proud of a man I'm proud to call a friend, as well as an absolutely fantastic writer.

Previous winners include luminaries such as Bill Pronzini, Loren Estleman, Ruth Rendell, John Lutz, and one of my very favorite suspense authors, Lawrence Block. The award will be presented in St. Petersburg in September, at the annual Bouchercon Mystery Conference. John is making plans to attend and accept the award in person. 

Which gives me the perfect opportunity to mention The Barrens, John's great new collection of short mystery/suspense fiction that's coming in October! Come visit with us at the Mississippi Book Festival on August 18 and hear all about it!

Meanwhile, I've had a blast traveling all over the state (and beyond) to support my new faith-based Oakdale series novel 40 Days. I've seen old friends, made new ones, and visited a bunch of Mississippi public libraries--that's truly where the rubber meets the road in terms of the word spreading about a book. Think about how many folks check out books from libraries, and how many of those people tell their friends. I'm so thankful for the many books clubs and Friends of the Library groups there are around Mississippi, and it's an honor to speak to so many of them.

THE DANCE BETWEEN

My busy year as publisher continues with the great new Valerie Winn novel, The Dance Between, which we'll release in less than six months. Valerie's  debut from 2012, Forsaking Mimosa, is a fantastic read--the protagonist, young Max Brinkmann, is the only boy in an all-girls Catholic high school. The sequel, The Dance Between, is set a quarter century later (in the early 1960s) and focuses on Beth Brinkmann, the daughter of Max and his wife Adele. Beth is no longer a kid, but she isn't quite a young lady yet--she's a little of both, and the emotional transition ranges from humorous to difficult to poignant. If you liked Mimosa, you'll really like this one.

Then there's John Floyd, who has short stories upcoming in SIXTEEN different publications, including Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Woman’s World, Black Cat Mystery Magazine, and the Bouchercon 2018 anthology. Also, John’s story “Gun Work” has also been selected by Otto Penzler and guest editor Louise Penny as one of the top 20 mysteries of 2017, along with stories by James Lee Burke, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, and others. It will appear this fall in the 2018 edition of Best American Mystery Stories. I'd say that's pretty good company. And just so you'll remember it, here's the cover of John's next superb collection of mystery/suspense short stories, The Barrens, which is also coming in October 2018.

My 40 Days tour has been a lot of fun. It included stops on four consecutive days at Mississippi libraries in Eupora, Bay St. Louis, Mendenhall, and Pontotoc (during National Library Week), and although there was a LOT of driving involved, it was a very rewarding experience. I met lots of nice people, saw some old friends, and witnessed firsthand how hard librarians and Friends group presidents work to provide quality programming for their patrons.

And a name and book title for you to keep in mind for spring 2019: I'm proud to add Janet Brown to the Dogwood Press team and publish her novel Deadly Visits. The beginning of the novel might strike you a bit like a ghost story, but it quickly emerges as much more--a fascinating read about mind control that a pair of out-of-control scientists wield via seemingly ordinary cell phones.

While preparing for Miss Mississippi 2018 in June, Molly finds time to visit schools and civic clubs to spread the word about her nonprofit, Caps That Care. The young breast cancer survivor made breast cancer awareness her platform long ago (her mother, Debra, is also a breast cancer survivor), and mother and daughter have tirelessly raised funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals all over the country and collected head coverings for cancer patients such as bandannas, beanies, scarves, and caps made of soft, breathable fabric. JUST DAYS AWAY

My first novel since late 2014, 40 Days, is a month from release! I'm very excited about it. And I'm asking myself the question I'm betting most--if not all--authors ask some variation of: WILL THEY LIKE IT? In my case, well, I sure hope so! And 40 Days, while a suspense novel set in the same small-town-full-of-mayhem fictional environment of Oakdale, Mississippi you remember, is a bit of a departure for me. It's very much a faith-based story with a hint of supernatural thrown in. I hope you like it! We'll get the party started at Lemuria in Jackson on Wednesday, March 7 at 5 p.m. Would love to see you there, and bring a friend! The next afternoon, March 8, I'll visit my hometown of Starkville, Mississippi, for a stop at The Book Mart and Cafe at 3 p.m. Many more book talks and signings are already lined up. I can't wait!

Counting the days until the launch!

A main theme of my novel Last Chance Texaco from 2012 is that sometimes the most routine of choices and circumstances can totally change our lives. Several months ago I was asked by my editor at Town and Gown Magazine of Starkville, Mississippi, if I would feel comfortable writing a feature for the breast cancer issue of the magazine. Of course I would, I said, and was assigned a story on Molly May, the outgoing Miss Mississippi State University, a contender for the title of Miss Mississippi 2018, and a breast cancer survivor. After the story was published I had an opportunity to hear Molly speak and couldn't have been more impressed with her poise, candor, and commitment to cancer patients through her breast cancer awareness platform. After a lot of careful thought, I decided to approach Molly about a book. I felt in my bones that her story was so powerful and inspirational--especially given what she had gone through at such a young age--that there would be a substantial market for it. And we'll roll out My Crowning Achievement (Beating Cancer) at the end of July. Molly, of course, is my choice for Miss Mississippi, but this is truly a memoir that will be just as relevant a generation from now as it will be when it hits the stores. Be watching for it!

A book that transcends pageants, even if Molly is named Miss America a year and a half from now!

Here's something important to know: Molly and her mother, Debra (also a breast cancer survivor) are forming a 501c3 nonprofit organization called Caps That Care. In addition to raising money for Batson Cancer Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, Molly and Debra have collected head coverings like beanies, bandannas, scarves, and soft caps--anything made of soft, breathable fabric that cancer patients can use in lieu of wigs--and donated packages of them to Children's Miracle Network hospitals in all fifty states! And I'm proud, as Molly's publisher, to donate ten percent of all copies sold of My Crowning Achievement (Beating Cancer) to Batson Hospital. So when you purchase a copy this summer or fall, you're doing a kind thing for cancer patients at the hospital.

In the meantime, John Floyd received another high honor: His story, "Gun Work", published in Coast to Coast Magazine in 2017, has been named as one of the stories in Best American Mystery Stories 2018! You may remember that his fantastic story, "Molly's Plan," was in Best American Mystery Stories 2015. Another great honor for a fantastic writer, and another fantastic collection 

of John Floyd short fiction is coming in the fall when we roll out The Barrens, and "Gun Work" will be included! Can't wait!

Okay, I'm a little biased, but "Gun Work" is the best of the bunch!

Valerie Winn's sequel to Forsaking Mimosa will be out late this year, too. It's called The Dance Between and is a very poignant novel that will make you laugh, think, and cry. It is set twenty-five years following the conclusion of Mimosa and a wonderful second edition of what--if I have anything to say about it--will be a multi-volume series!  Below is a photo of a nice man from Pensacola, Florida, named Dennis Dugger with Valerie. He bought a copy of Mimosa last summer and emailed Valerie about how much he enjoyed the book. Valerie said she told him to find her at the Pink Rooster Art Galley in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, if he was ever in town, and he did and once again bragged on how much he enjoyed the novel!

Nobody looks cooler and more at home than Susan Cushman doing a radio interview! She was interviewed by River Jordan at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville last October, and she continues to tour on behalf of Cherry Bomb and turns new readers on every day to her sterling debut novel!

CONQUERING THE BIG APPLE

This is one of the more interesting things I've been able to blog about -- and brag about -- when it comes to my friend and fellow author John Floyd. Remember his short story "Molly's Plan," which we included in Dreamland in 2016? It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 2014 and later selected by James Patterson for inclusion in The Best American Mystery Stories. 

Now it has been chosen by the New York Public Library to be a part of their permanent digital collection, which means it will be available through the library’s SimplyE mobile reading app (http://simplye.net). When commuters log in to the subway wi-fi network they’ll be directed to a library website with various collections of fiction and nonfiction -- similar to a Netflix queue. As busy as the NYC subway system stays, that makes for tremendous exposure for "Molly's Plan."

Can't wait for 2018 ... we'll have three new titles, including my latest Oakdale series novel, 40 Days. Taking place in forty days of real time during the season of Lent and culminating on Easter Sunday, this novel has a faith-based feel and even a supernatural flavor that my previous Oakdale thrillers didn't have. But it's Oakdale -- same crazy people living there, lots of old money, skeletons in everyone's closets, and a whole slew of people up in each other's business. (Sounds like home, doesn't it?) John was recently at Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi, to conduct a unique interview with New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan about her latest book, The Last Castle (an epic story of the Biltmore House, the nation’s largest home). John is a big fan of Denise's work, and the conversational session had the audience gathered for Denise's reading absolutely riveted!

A NEW WORLD RECORD

With school back in session this fall, how about a little quiz?

TRUE OR FALSE: A book published by Dogwood Press is poised to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

Uh, I wish. Maybe one day ...

TRUE OR FALSE: A Dogwood Press-published author is included in an anthology of 100 stories from 100 authors, which should indeed eclipse the previous record (50 stories from 50 publishers).

Yep, that's true! John Floyd's story "The Tenth Floor" is in CEP Greatest Anthology Written, published by Celenic Earth Publications. The book will feature authors from South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Nigeria, Mexico, Bolivia, and Switzerland. An official launch event is scheduled for September 30 in Cape Town, South Africa, where the book will be “authenticated and verified” according to specifications by Guinness. To attain World Record status, 500 print copies and 500 e-book copies of the book must be sold.

Back to the story "Rooster Creek" ... it's time for the big reveal: The next John Floyd collection of short stories, entitled The Barrens, will be published by Dogwood Press in summer 2018 ... in time for the annual Mississippi Book Festival! The Barrens will contain 30 stories, and not only will all be mysteries, of course, there will be an element of crime in all. Can't wait!

Now for another big reveal: My own new Oakdale series novel, 40 Days, will be released in March 2018. It's my first book in three and a half years, and a bit different from previous Oakdale volumes. Yes, there's still the seemingly serene little town with all kinds of crime and dysfunction bubbling below the surface, lots of folks still up in each other's business. But 40 Days has not only a faith-based element to it, there's a supernatural component to the story as well. It takes place in 40 days of real time and ties into the season of Lent. I'm really excited about it.

Meantime, Susan Cushman is making stops all over the southeast in support of Cherry Bomb. In October she'll visit Pass Christian Books on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and a stop at Page and Palette Books in Fairhope, Alabama, isn't far away. She'll also visit several north Mississippi libraries in the near future, including the Webster County Public Library in Eupora on Monday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m.
